new york saturday

AIPAD was a joke. it was a ridiculous flea market of traditional mostly overrated work and bad money jokes. but i did like seeing czech prints, a sally man and raghibir singh print. it freaks me out to see harry callahans work because his printing is just so beautiful. such a full range of tones. it's was also cool to see that koudelka was not a great printer. i wonder if that is the compromise when one is so much more about a particular decisive moment.

also, going to an event that feels so rigid and structured, and seeing what established galleries value due to tradition or name sake really makes me want to run away from photography. especially after seeing cool places like machine project. there's just way too much awesome shit to think about.

we use the word nature to make everything seem familiar.

amazing, i flutter

i would also like to arrive at the heart of what constitutes a devotional practice. It is metaphysical and technical; this lovely little masterpiece is about the medium of experience, the projection of devotion, the making of art.

his definition of devotion: the opening or the interruption that allows us to experience what is hidden and accept with our hearts our given situation.

these days i am working on a new visual vocabulary. i left my notebook of good notes at scott's, but this is what i can remember:

mushrooms
family business

that's all. i am also giving myself the next month (before my relocation) to really refine my color printing. i am so excited. and print for an upcoming show outside of chicago.

my trial has ended for my adobe suite which means that i need to look for some serial numbers so i can finish my new website, and also continue to put my work out there. unfortunately, so many of the venues require a 'looking fee' of at least 25 dollars or more (some as much at 60 bones, whoa). i am thinking about selling a little bit of the things i already have to get me a little farther.

----

i told myself i would write about my trip before it disappeared (i had a really good quote about erasing memories, but that was also in my notebook).

i'm not in the mood to write, but here are some things about the last two and half weeks:

driving across america
henderson swamp (bayou, bayou, after bayou)
bourbon st.
lizzy
jasmine
rose
texas and rolling hills
peach farms in fredericksburg, tx
store in harper, tx
seeing dad
seeing mom
seeing sister
endless cacti
crying & hugging
muir beach/zen
nora
experiencing deep sadness about another (in other words, living a great love)
golden palm (trees)
beach birthday

TODAY
my rose: getting off work
my thorn: seeing the good of philadelphia

today was so much fun! george, sarah and i walked the l.a. river where we encountered this tiny asian woman pacing back and forth with her electric blue umbrella. we also saw an entirely road-flat lizard baked from the sun (a white under belly!) so much so that it resulted in a magic eye experience on the pavement.

george found a very large sturdy stick to utilize as a fruit picker (nail a can at the end so he can harvest fruit trees). he showed us this public lemon tree, and i used the stick to beat so many lemons off of the tree. the women moving groceries from their car into their house told us that we should be careful because 'homeless people poo and pee near that tree' after we had collected 20 something lemons. we also found an orange tree where sarah picked three large tangerine, and then we tasted a neighbor's loquat. we made a delicious but slightly bitter lemonade later.

we went to this gluten free, vegan diner in los feliz and got avocado pancakes, lentil burger, and curry. pretty good those pancakes. that was our day. we tried some yoga in the evening, and max met us. really great day. the beach tomorrow, and meet up with dad for sashimi.
